The Strategic Defense Initiative, started by the US government, has initiated a lot of protest from sceintists, and particulary particle physicists. Attempts were made to involve also DESY into the "Deutsches Strategie Forum".

A report in "Der Spiegel" from 1986 shows a list of participants in the  "Deutsches Strategie Forum".

A signature campaign was started at DESY, with more than 300 signees protesting against any participation in SDI, as reported by "Wissenschaft & Frieden" in 1985.
